Wounded Alleluias - digital download
Craig CourtneyDescription
A refrain of Alleluias surrounds this prayer for healing written by Joseph Martin. Inspiring musical images become metaphors for redemption: "Lord, heal our wounded alleluias; touch our fragile, simple praise; comfort every troubled wayward song with your gentle grace." For SATB choir and piano.
Composer Note
Composer Joseph Martin provided the lyrics to this anthem and upon reading it I was immediately drawn to its honesty. Our wounds, our fragility and our waywardness don’t prevent us from singing an “alleluia” (the universal word for praise).
I was also drawn to the musical metaphors embedded in the words: “song", “bow", “strings", “theme”, “hymn”, and “symphony" are just a few examples and they add a profound lyricism to the sacred poetry. Each alleluia refrain outdoes the one before and the cascading effect in the final refrain represents a heavenly scene in which the angels and all the redeemed sing praises around the throne of God.
